Farm news, Sept 06/2021

We’ll have the following veggies this week:

Lettuce, spinach, chard, arugula, broccoli, bok choi, hakurie turnips, celery, carrots, beets, onions, potato, beans, peppers, melons, cucumber, zucchini, tomatoe, dill, cilantro, parsley, basil, green onions and brussel sprout tops.

On the farm this week:

We’re getting a second summer. We’ve had lots of warm sunny days and our cucumbers have picked up speed again; so we ended up picking lots today. And the tomatoes and melons seem to be ripening faster also. They must know something I don’t about when the first frost is coming..

We’ve got another short window for hakurie salad turnips – they’re so sweet and flavourful. If you haven’t tried them yet you should and they’re great raw!

It’s also time for possibly the most controversial vegetable of all time: Brussel sprouts tops! Usually people get really excited about them or they say ‘what the?’ To answer the first question – sautee it with onions and (it’s very popular with bacon also). The actual brussel sprouts will be coming in about one month. Now that we cut the top off them the sprouts will fill out faster and then once they’ve had a few good frosts we’ll start on the brussels sprouts.

.

I also got lucky and got some sympathy from a nearby Hutterite colony. Someone came by to bring us some turkey manure and he saw my tiny little manure spreader and I told him it takes me 2 weeks to spread manure and he felt so sorry for me that he said ‘ we’re going to help you out. We can spread that in a couple of hours!’. They’ve got a monster manure spreader they use to spread 20 tonnes at time on their fields and are going to bring it over at the end of the year. I just got 2 weeks off in November! I’m just going to kick back and drink some martins while I watch them spread all this manure. But in the meantime, the farm now smells like manure everywhere. So if I smell like manure, that’s why.

And it’s Hannahs last week this week. She is moving to Calgary at the end of the week to join a rodeo! Here’s Hannah doing our penultiate hoeing of our penultimate planting on her penultimate week of work here.

That’s it for this week. See you soon!
