Farm news, sept 21

We will have the following veggies this week:

lettuce, spinach, kale, tomato, leeks, peppeps, eggplant, broccoli, carrots, beets, onions, potato, squash, dill, parsley, and cilantro.

We have a few different kinds of squash: butternut, acorn, pie pumpkins, spaghetti, carnival, and sweet dumpling, and orange hubbard ( I thought we planted blue hubbard also but we haven’t found those yet).  If you want to get crazy – try making a pumpkin pie with a butternut squash and buttnerut soup with a pumpkin.  It’s much better that way I think.

On the farm this week

It’s officially fall and still no frost!  What’s up with that.  I think I drank more water today than I did all year.  Even though we don’t have any frost yet, the squash are looking ripe so we started harvesting them.  We’ve got a greenhouse and a bit full of them,  so far, but there’s still a bunch out in the field.

For everyone who didn’t belive me about the giant rabbit, I ran into him in the hay again and this time got a picture! To give you perspective, those white boxes to the left are a row of houses.  This picture was taken from about a mile away, and yes this rabbit is about as large as a house.   And I still haven’t figured out what it eats.

It seems we have a number of biologists in the csa that let me know the spider last week was a Banded Garden Spider (Argiope Trifasciata) which is part of the orb weaver family.   Can anyone identify this giant rabbit?

Finally, I mowed the lawn this week! that’s not really newsworthy you’re all thinking?   Well I learnt growing zucchini is as easy as spilling some plants on the lawn and then not mowing it.  In fact the best zucchinis we seem to have ever grown have been from this lawn plant.  There’s also some corn and lettuce that aren’t in the picture.  I finally got a working lawn mower again, so decided it was time to mow however….

Finally, this is the last week of csa pick up for anyone who signed up for 15 weeks.  I’ve emailed those people, so if you’re not sure and didn’t get an email then you signed up for 18 weeks.  Thanks again to all the people that signed up!

See you soon,
Jonathan, Nicole and Sarah
