Farm news July 15th

This week CSA’ers will be choosing from a selection of:  lettuce, spinach, carrots, beets, peas, broccoli, turnips, kohlrabi, cucumbers, zucchini, chard, kale, arugula, scallions, dill, parsley, cilantro and basil.

We also hope to be throwing in some garlic scapes.  These are delicious and are great to just fry up, and are available only once a year.Below is an old picture of our garlic in the spring.  Our current garlic situation is a sad story  for another time, but hey at least we’ve got scapes!

On The farm this week:

We’re noticing the days getting shorter already – I guess it’s all coming to an end soon even though we just got started!.  We finished planting all the fall broccoli this week as well as some celery and more basil and the greenhouse is mostly empty now except for lettuce and scallions and it feels good to have most of the planting now done.  July is always a crazy month because we’re busy harvesting, but the weeds are growing like crazy, so we’re weeding like crazy, and there’s still so much planting to do, so we’re planting like crazy – we’re just all around crazy in July!  On top of that, July is the month when everything decides to breaks down.  This past week the irrigation and then my tractor broke down – apparently I was supposed to put oil in it.   Thankfully one can fix almost anything with google nowadays.  I’ve also got some help from the veteran farmer Bob who I rent land from and it should be running tomorrow ( once I get some more oil).

That’s it for this week.  See you soon!
