Farm News, Sept 19/2016

We will have the following veggies this week:

lettuce, spinach, chard, kale, broccoli, bok choi, cabbage, celery, beans, peppers, cucumbers, carrots, potatos, onions, beets, scallions, leeks, hot peppers, melon, squash, dill, parsley, cilantro and basil.

On the farm this week:

It’s the 15th week of harvest now, so it’s the last week for those of you who signed up for the 15 week option.  So I’m expecting some goodbye hugs at the pick up this week!

The basil this week will be our ‘pesto special’.   Since should be having a frost pretty soon and that will kill the basil, we’ll harvest all the basil plants and you can take as much as you want.  It won’t look great, but will be great for pesto!

Broccoli is back in season now, we should have it everyweek until the end! Parkas are also back in season and we’re offering an extra 2 lbs of broccoli for whoever shows up wearing the biggest parka this week!  Bring on winter I say.

It almost rained here today.  I think we’ve only gotten rain once in the last couple months.  So, I’m really confused when everytime I go into the city everyone asks me how we’re making out with all this rain.  Somehow the rain stops right at the perimeter.  I’m happy about that right now because it’s easy to keep things watered well enough with this cool weather.

The dry weather is also making it easier to work up new land. I’ve been busy trying to get this new field ready for next year.  It’s higher up and has a nice slope to it, so I think the drainage should be pretty good on it.  Right now it’s lots of big chunks of hard mud full of quack grass so I’m trying to bust them up and kill of the quack grass.

Finally we had a surprise visit from Sarah this week.  She finished her walk early and has been back for 2 weeks and put in  a few hours cleaning onions before going on another walk to Minnesota.  I really don’t think walking this much can be good for you.

That’s it for this week.

See you soon!
