Farm news, Oct 7

In your box this week:

A choice of: lettuce, spinach, eggplant, kohlrabi, celery, brussels sprouts, winter squash, potatoes, carrots, beets, turnips, onions, leeks, scallions, dill, cilantro and parsley.

The kohlrabi this week is different than in the spring.  It’s a larger fall storage variety but is just as tasty.

On the farm this week:

We had our first real frost yesterday morning – minus 3.  So, it’s officially rubber glove season.  Sarah has a stylish pair the length of her whole body that are great for washing vegetables in cold weather and also doubles as a poncho when it rains.

We’re slowly cleaning up the fields now.  We pulled up all the tomato trellising and a bunch of irrigation and tilled in our tomato plants and squash along with their green manures.  It’s amazing how instantly the fields are transformed.  ‘No more weeding that field this year’  is usually the first thought that comes to my mind when I till in a field.

Our eggplants have survived the frost pretty well, so we’ll be harvesting the rest of the eggplant this week. So enjoy your last eggplant of the year.

I had a picture for this week that proves I also do some work on the farm, but it’s not uploading…..so I’ll have to try again next week.

That’s if for now.   See you soon!
