We’ll have choices from the following veggies this week for CSA: lettuce, spinach, chard, kale, broccoli, cabbage, celery, beets, zucchini, cucumber, carrots, beans, kohlrabi, sweet onions, dill, cilantro, parsley, green onion.
On the farm this week:
We had (some) rain! It wasn’t enough to water the garden, but enough to make us all muddy and wet the ground enough so I didn’t have to move sprinklers around to germinate what we seeded last week. We are on the home stretch of planting now. The only thing left to plant this year is spinach, lettuce, herbs and in a couple weeks we’ll be all done!
We are picking beans this week, which means our time for weeding is going to be much less. Fortunately our weed situation is somewhat under control. You can also see that I planted the last row of beans too close to the squash which is huge right now! It’s actually grown highter than the sprinkers which are 3′ tall. so I don’t know how we’ll water the squash again. The tall squash plants are the perfect place to hide and then scare people when they’re picking beans. I also found a pillow and mattress in there so now I know where people are when they say they’re going to ‘weed the squash’.
Actually everything is really tall this year. Our brussel sprouts are also about to outgrow our sprinklers also and our tomatoes have run out of posts to trellis them to – which has never happened. It’s really turning into a jungle out here! And I keep finding sleeping bags in all the tall crops. I expect we’ll start picking these tomatoes for CSA in about 2 weeks.
We have also started on our summer varieties of broccoli now – Here’s Sarah holding them up and they’re 2lb each head. So if you get one of those big heads, you might wnat check our recipe section for broccoli soup recipes! Yes that’s her winter clothing because its that cold this summer!
That’s it for this week. See you soon,
Jonathan, Sarah, Irina, Sandra, Tessa, Morgan, Alyssa and Emerson.
