On the farm this week;

It’s the last week of summer CSA. Thank you for signing up and I hope you enjoyed your veggies this summer!

It rained all week …again! I don’t actually remember what dry ground looks like anymore. With winter approaching we’ve resigned ourselves to the fact that harvesting carrots is going to be wet this year. The only thing that’s worse than wet is frozen and wet; so we’re bringing in extra help to get it done before it gets really cold. Here’s Hin holding a a freshly pulled and ready to eat carrot!

And since it’s the last week we are on our very last plantings of everything. Here’s Alyssa and Shola harvesting from the last planting of spinach. Actually – this was planted after the last planting. Out of 10 plantings of spinach this summer, I think this is the only one that has survived all the water. I hope I just didn’t jinx this planting! We are hoping it lasts a few more weeks. Our lettuce and spinach are susceptible to disease in the fall, but I’ve been spraying them with extra nutrients- mostly iron and manganese and seaweed to try and keep them healthy. So far, no disease, but I’ll be sending samples in to a lab in a week or 2 to see if it actually helped or if I just think it did to make myself feel like the effort was worth it.

And we are onto the very last vegetable to harvest of the year: Brussel sprouts- which have just filled out their sprouts. Here’s Sandra holding up a brussle sprout stalk. To keep your brussel sprouts from wilting I recommend popping them off and putting in a container to retain humidity.

That’s it for this summer!

Thanks again

Joanthan, Sarah, Sandra, Alyssa, Shola, Hin, Barb,
