Farm news, July 20/2020

We’ll have the following veggies this week:

lettuce, spinach, chard, kale, peas, carrots, beets, kohlrabi, broccoli, cabbage( full shares), cucumber, zucchini, dill, parsley, cilantro, basil, green onion, garlic scapes. We’ll have cabbage for full shares this week and for half shares sometime soon also.

On the farm this week:

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! I feel like we made it through a very busy couple weeks where I wasn’t sure if the weeds would win or we would. But, with all the extra help we had the weeds are finally under control for now. Here are the fall carrots that we managed to save this week. Those weeds were crazy!

And here finally is a picture of Allegra and Annika on their 3rd straight week of picking peas. These 2 have picked A LOT of peas the last 3 weeks. I’m pretty sure all they see when they close their eyes are peas. All I see when I close my eyes is them picking peas! This will be our last week with peas. Next up is beans! One of my greatest fears in life is having peas and beans ready to pick at the same time. With the cold spring we had, I planted the beans a week later than normal just to make sure they didn’t overlap the peas which were running behind schedule. We have some tiny beans just forming now, so I expect the big bean pickings will start in about 2 weeks, with maybe a little bit next week.

We are also did our final weeding on a lot of things like this kale and have now planted rye in the pathways to help suppress the weeds and double as a green manure that we can till in next year. Also helping this week was Mallory who’s a westjet pilot, and who I found out can rent a plane from the aiport right beside the farm and take us to Churchill for the weekend. If anyone wants to go to Churchill for the weekend, I”m like 35% serious about doing this!

You can see the rye growing in between these rows of cabbages already. To help protect the soil and the microbes we try to have something growing on as much ground as we can as much as possible.

That’s it for this week.

See you soon!
