Farm news, July 10/2017

For CSA we will have the following veggies to choose from this week:
lettuce, spinach, chard, kale, carrots beets, radish, turnip, kohlrabi, peas, broccoli, zucchini, cucumber, dill, cilantro, basil, parsley, and scallions.

On the farm this week:

It’s been hawt!(no that’s not a typo).  If you don’t believe me just ask any of these guys.  There’s been a lot of topless people in my basement this week.

We had some extra help this weekend from Shenggang who came to weed this weekend again and brought his son Iman to help.   And then he told me he had been weeding all week with his other job!  If anyone wants some weeding done I hear his evenings are still free.    So we managed to weed a little more than the weeds grew this week, so hopefully we can keep it up.

I also planted some winter rye between the rows of zucchini, cucumbers and all the squash to help keep the ground covered and take up nutrients and compete with the weeds in all that bare space.   While I was doing it I got caught by surprise when I found some cucumbers on the cucumber plants! I was not expecting to find those there. There were just a few but I think by next week there’ll be lots.

Sheri Lee Krymusa has done it again and is 4 for 4 in all the contests this year by having the weediest garden!  Is there no stopping her?!  Below is her tomato garden and there’s not even tomatos in it – it’s just weeds!  For this week who can name the weeds in her tomato garden for an extra broccoli?  I have to keep going until I stump Sheri – lee.

Finally we’re tilling in the first plantings of things and replanting.   This week I tilled in a bunch of old lettuce mix, spinach, asian greens and radish and it’s being reincarnated into our fall planting of broccoli, carrots, beets, spinach and lettuce.   Here we are planting broccoli and getting some help from a csa member Alex who toughed it out on the hottest day of the year.

That’s it for this week.  See you soon!
