Farm news, Aug 19

In your box this week:  Csa’ers will be choosing from:

Lettuce, spinach, cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes, eggplant, melons, peppers, onions, potatoes, cabbage, beans, corn, dill, cilantro, basil, parsley and scallions.

The corn portions this week will be more of an appetizer, but by next week there’ll be lots.

It’s getting hot’n sweaty and mosquito-y out here.   It’s feeling a lot like last summer – when the sun finally goes down the mosquitos come out with large appetites from sitting in the shade and watching us work all day.  I”m not sure which I like more,  the sun or the mosquitos.   The cabbage moths have also started to do their thing so we’ve covered the kale (which was getting chewed up) back up and will soon probably be covering the fall broccoli and cabbage.  We will likely be taking this week off of harvesting kale to let some new leaves grow now that it’s all covered.  Sorry to all the Kale lovers! (and you’re welcome to Kale non – likers).  We’re also finished the last of the spring broccoli, and the timing was perfect because it was starting to get worms this week.   There’s more broccoli and cauliflower planted for the fall.

This week we also finished all the planting for this year!  On saturday we planted out the last round of the lettuce, spinach and herbs.   It felt pretty great to be able to turn my alarm off  my phone reminding me to water the greenhouse.  The only drawback is now I can’t look as popular pretending my alarm is an important phone every day.   Maybe I’ll keep the alarm on anyways…

Also, as some of you may remember, this week is spandex week and it would make us very happy if any csa members came to the pick up wearing spandex.  For every spandex item you wear, you’ll get an extra pound of tomatoes!

That’s it for this week.  See you soon!
