On the Farm this week:

Lots of exciting things happened this week.   First of all, it rained today for the first time this summer.  I’ve started wondering when that was going to happen.  Second of all, we finished planting…..for the year!   This weekend we planted the last of the lettuce, spinach and herbs.  There was a big ‘ahhh yeah’ when that happened.  That means there’s going to be a lot less bending over happening at the farm from now on.  I don’t know if I’m getting older each year, but I’ve been starting to feel like there’s a limit to the number of times a person can bend over, and I might be approaching it.  Less exciting is that the cabbage moths are multiplying, so we’ve gone back to covering up the kale, which is now well protected from the upcoming flea beetle attack also.  This is almost the end of the summer for Caitlin and sadly this will be her last week covering up the kale.

In other exciting news, I bought a farm and will be moving there for next year.  It’s in St Andrews and just 10 min from the city.  So no – one has an excuse to not attend the next weedfest.  Posing here with his big ruler is my friend Jean Guy from John Boy Farms (yes there seems to be 2 farmer Johns in this city and I’m afraid there’s not room for either of us).  Jean Guy came out to help me measure the slope and decide the best spot for the garden.  Anyone who guesses his height gets an extra onion.

One of my soon to be neighbours has already tilled the garden, and there was a big ‘ahhh no’ when I saw the rocks it dug up.  It looks like the bending over will continue a little longer – at least until the rocks are picked out of this field.  Anyone who wants to come pick rocks will get a 50 lb bag of carrots in the fall.  This Friday – it’s going to be an event not to miss!!

That’s it for this week.  See you soon,
