Farm news Aug 03

We’ll have choices of the following veggies for CSa this week:

lettuce, chard, kale cucumber, zucchinni, carrots, beets, broccoli, celery, onions, dill, cilantro, parsley basil and green onions. The celery has lots of flavour, but it is not super chewable raw; so I think it is best cooked.

On the farm this week:

This week we are starting to harvest our sweet onions. The trick to eating a lot of cucumbers for me is cucumber salad with sweet onions. And guess what – we’ll have lots of cucumbers this week! We are actualy harvesting our onion 2 weeks later than last year . To cope with the stress of things running behind I’ve decided to trick myself that it’s July and it makes me feel a lot better about things. I’ve actually written all my august appointments into my July calendar; so I don’t run into trouble. I hope everyone had a good July long weekend!

We are also harvesting potatoes this week: Here’s Shola and Hin harvesting potatoes. Hin has still been regularly driving the potato wacker a few times a week for the last 3 weeks, but they still managed to do quite a number on the potatoes. So after this week we might hold off on harvesting more potatoes for a bit and hope we can get some more growth. There is grass planted as a cover crop and the haggard looking things between the grass are our rows of ravaged potato plants.

And we can feel the approach of winter now as the mornings are getting darker each day which is crazy seeing as it’s only July. Here’s Alyssa and Kateryna harvesting in the cool early morning.

That’s it for this week. Thanks and see you soon!
