Farm news, June 29/2026

We;ll have choices from the following veggies for CSA this week: Lettuce, spinach, kale, chard, dill, cilantro, parsley, green onion, kohlrabi, radish, turnip, broccolini, beets, bok choi – and hopefully – sugar snap peas. and garlic scapes.

The sugar snap peas are edible pod peas – so you do not need to shell them.

don’t forget to visit the recipe section of my website for ideas on unfamiliar vegetables. The pink salad turnip is much like the hakurie turnips (sweet and juicy), but just a lot bigger and with a little bit of bitterness mixed in. They are great in salads or cooked. The leaves are more bitter than the leaves of hakurie turnip – but are also edible. The kohlrabi is great sliced into chips, shredded into coleslaw, baked into fries or added to salad. Heres’ Alyssa holding up some of the sweet pink turnips.

The scapes are great to add to anything as you would garlic – or even raw if you really love garlice. It makes a great pesto just on it’s own or combined with any herb or leafy green.

On the farm this week:

I feel like I’ve died and gone to mosquito heaven. Since the rainstorm of 2 weeks ago, the ditches in our fields have looked like this (below). And I have found out that 2 weeks is the just the right amount of time to breed a very substantial amount of mosquitos and they all came tout today! Nonetheless; we were very fortunate that we did not have to harvest today in a thunderstorm It was thundering and looking ominous all day, but we did not get any rain.

This week there is more to harvest other than radish! We will have new larger round things to add starting this week to replace the smaller round things of the last few weeks (radish and turnip). This weeks round things will include: kohlrabi, pink salad turnip and beets. Here’s Sandra in the beets:

And pea picking is underway! Pea picking is a very long and tedious job, and today that job fell to Adriian. Here he is picking peas and by the looks of it; still regretting coming to work on the farm.

And here’s one more picture of Adriian picking garli scapes.

That’s it for this week.

Thanks and see you soon!
