Farm news, Sept 8

We will have the following veggies this week:

lettuce, spinach, chard, kale, dill, cilantro, parsley, basil, scallions, onions, beets, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, corn, zucchini and beans.

On the farm this week:

It’s been doing that thing again where it just keeps raining and being cold.  This is supposed to be the 2 weeks a year where I experience happiness, and if the weather keeps doing this I’ll have to wait until next year.  The cucumbers seem to have gone on strike n0w until the weather warms up and there probably won’t be any ready to pick this week so we’ll be reviving the old bean patch instead.  Come on sun where are you?

I’ve got a new potatoe digger that we’ve started digging the potatoes with.  It’s an old horse drawn potatoe digger.  I tried to get Rich to pull it, but it quickly became apparent that Rich is not a horse, so we finally resorted to the tractor.  If I ever get around to having a farm day we’re going to see if we can pull the potato digger with a team of people.  Who’s up for that??

This week we also have special help digging and washing vegetables from Organic Planet’s Emily Stevens.   I have to be return the favor this weekend by driving out Organic Planets’ food and equipment to harvest moon festival and serving their perogies and borchst.  It’ll be my first ever Harvest Moon festival and I’m looking forward to it.  I hope to attend a workshop on growing winter greens while I”m there, and  hopefully I’ll see some of you there too.

That’s it for this week.  See you soon!

Jonathan, Nicole and Rich.
