Farm news, sept 30

In your box this week:

Csa’ers will have a selection from:  Lettuce, spinach, chard, kale, broccoli, potatoes, leeks, peppers, carrots, onions, beets, basil, dill, parsley, cilantro and scallions.

On the farm this week:

Life is getting easy!  The weather is nice and the days are getting shorter – it’s almost like a holiday.  We still weeded this week though, but I told Sarah this really was the last time (but it probably isn’t).   The kale is recovering now and, so we hope to have more of it the next couple weeks.  This week we supplemented our kale with some from ‘food ethos farm’ in a trade for carrots.

It’s definitely been the warmest fall this year so far, but we have frost in the forecast now, yay!  So we plan on harvesting brussels spouts next week (Maybe even some for this week).  We harvested some today to see how they’d be to clean after the flea beetle parade, and I’m not sure yet if we’ll be doing them on the stalk or off because it’s taking a fair bit of time to clean them on the stalk.  We’ll at least do them once on the stalk.

People have been saying they think Sarah does all the work on the farm because she’s usually working in the pictures, whereas I’m usually just holding up something that Sarah picked.  Well, it looks like I can’t prove them wrong this week, but I will soon.

That’s all for now.

See you soon,

Jonathan, Nicole and Sarah.
