We’ll have the following veggies for CSA this week:
Lettuce, spinach, chard, kale, carrots, beets, onion, potato, squash, brussel sprout tops, cabbage, tomato, leeks, peppers,, dill, cilantro, parsley, basil, scallions.
On the farm this week;
It was cooold! We even had 2 frosts this week – though I don’t know when! We were supposed to get frost last Monday night and I have temperature sensors set to call me when it gets cold so that I can go turn on the sprinklers, but I did not get a phone call Monday night and Tuesday I thought everything looked fine, but I didn’t look around that hard as were were getting ready for the csa pickup. Then Wednesday morning I went out to the field and saw this: all our squash and bean plants leaves had turned black. Even a few of the squash fruit had frozen spots on them. All I know is sometime between Monday and Wednesday we got frost. To be extra safe on Saturday I put multiple sensors outside and set them to call me when the temperature goes below 1.3. That was an overreaction because I started getting phone calls at midnight which was super annoying because it was too early to turn on the sprinklers. I finally turned the sprinklers on at 3 and it was just in time as there was frost on the ground at that point.

So now it’s time to start on the fall vegetables, starting with the brussel sprout tops! We cut the tops off so that the plant stops growing up and starts filling out it’s sprouts which we’ll be harvesting in 2-3 weeks. They are great sauteed with bacon and onions are used as a hearty green in soups.

And since it’s the 15th week – and that means it’s some peoples last pick up – we’re giving you something that will last a while – a huge cabbage. If you were hoping this would be over, sorry ! you’re not getting away that easy. I don’t know why the fall cabbages are so big this year other than I planted the cabbages 2″ further apart than last year. Here’s Sarah in her instinctive bowling stance holding a 7 lb cabbage.

That’s it for this week. Thanks and see you soon!
