Farm news Sep 02/2024

We’ll have choices from the following veggies this week:

spinach, chard, kale, celery, broccoli, carrots, beets, onion, potato, canteloupe, watermelon, leeks, tomato, peppers, beans, cucumber, zucchini, basil, cilantro, parsley, green onion, brussel sprout tops.

On the farm this week:

Happy September everyone! Usually it is this time of year that we start getting heckled by swarms of children after school asking things like ‘how much for one carrot’ and ‘how much will I pay them to eat a hot pepper’. I’m wondering if they will find us now that we have moved.. If any children ask where the market is don’t tell them!

And speaking of children, we have the favorite vegetable of all children coming out this week: Brussel sprout tops. These are not Brussle sprouts, but rather just the tops cut off of the plants that the Brussel sprouts grow on and these are something everyone should try. Once you have you tried them you will become very sad that you have waited this long to try them. The classic recipe is to sautee them with bacon and onion.

Now that the tops are cut off, they will stop growing up and fill out the rest of the brussel sprouts on the stalk. We’ll start harvesting the brussel sprouts in about 3 weeks

Here are Alyssa and Tessa Standing in the Brussel sprouts.

We also have another new item that’s even more popular than brussel sprouts: Melons! Again, a ripe Manitoba melon is something everyone should try. We get told very often by people who don’t like melons that they love our melons. We’ll have canteloupe and watermelon. Here’s Sarah with a rare find : a canteloupe that looks like a set of big eyes. At least that’s what it looks like to me. What does it look like to you? Some lucky peerson will be picking up this canteloupe this week and if that’s you I want to hear how you decided to eat it.

And finally, we are bringing out one more new fall crop this week – leeks. they are nice to sautee with your brussel sprouts tops – or the classic potato leek soup.

That’s it for this week. Thanks and see you soon!
