Farm news, July 17/2017

We will have the following veggies this week:

lettuce, spinach, chard, kale, peas, broccoli, cabbage(full shares), carrots, beets, radish, turnip, kohlrabi, cucumber, zucchini, scallions, dill, cilantro, parsley, basil.

On the farm this week:

It’s wet!   I don’t know how much rain we got – my rain gauge said 0″, but it had blown upside down and I”m not sure if it’s still accurate when it’s upside down.  It’s so wet that I took one step and my boot stayed in the ground and then another step then my sock stayed in the ground and I couldn’t find it after.  So if you find a sock in your vegetables I’d love if you could return it to me.

At least I got got to see how the drainage I had done last year worked.  2 winters ago I had dug a ditch through a low spot in the middle of the field, and last november I had 2 big bulldozers with gps controlled blades slope the entire field so it all drains to the ditch so in theory the whole field should drain.  I guess I should get around to mowing the ditch one of these days..  Now with all the water it’s only a matter of time until…mosquitos!  Oh poor Jaroslav doesn’t know what he’s in for.  Also now each night all I hear is the sound of crickets.   Actually – is a cricket a frog or a grasshopper?  I’m not sure! It’s frogs that I hear.    That’ll be the skill testing question for this week, (no google).   If you know if a cricket is a frog or a grasshopper you win another broccoli.

Last week the trucks kept getting stuck in the road – aka mud pit, so I finally faced the inevitable and put in a proper road.   It goes all the way up to the new building where farm pick up people will be able to park – when it’s finished.  It will be soon I promise!

Other than that it’s just been more planting and weeding whenever we can.  Thursdays we have extra help from Kelsey who is our resident thistle puller – she comes each  thursday and pulls thistles all day long – without gloves!    Here she is pulling thistles in our fall cabbage.

That’s it for this week.  See you soon!
