Farm news, Aug 11

We will have these veggies this week:

Lettuce, spinach, chard, kale, cabbage, cucumber, zucchini, beans, carrots, beets, onions, eggplant, peppers, cilantro, dill, parsley and basil.

On the farm this week:

Time is flying by again – the summers already half done!  This is our 9th week of harvest and so there’s only 9 to go.  It’s starting to feel like fall already; this week we get to start at 630 now because it’s too dark at 6.  Let the easy times begin.  If it were up to me we’d start at noon, but the greens keep so much longer when we harvest first thing in the morning before the sun gets hot.

We also got some serious rain.  From Wednesday to Friday we got 4″ of rain and our lower areas were pretty wet.  I thought I had a plan to drain excess water but Friday evening I went to bed not having been able to move the water.  But then at 6 am on saturday my phone woke me up and it was Jean Guy yelling at me to “get out up, get a pump and a shovel and get to work”.  So that’s what I did and by the end of the day the field had started to dry out.  Phew!   I have to thank Jean Guy of John Boy farms for the motivational speech.

We’ve also pulled our fall garlic which is enormous and are now drying it, and our last planting of carrots is well on it’s way!

That’s it for this week.

See you soon,

Jonathan, Nicole, Sarah and Michael.
