On the farm this week

Summer is over! The mornings are cold now and it feels like frost is coming soon. So we are onto the fall crops this week like squash and leeks. Our goal over the next week will be to start harvesting the squash before we get frost. Here’s Shola (finally wearing a jacket when it makes sense) digging up Leeks which are even harder to dig up than carrots in the wet clay

And speaking of carrots, I didn’t schedule anyone to come dig up carrots this morning because it was supposed to be raining all day. But then it didn’t rain all morning and we could have gotten some carrots out of the ground. Ahhhhh!!!!!!! Fortunately we managed to finish the harvest just as it started to rain this afternoon. I don’t know what Shola would have ended up wearing if it started raining.

Last week we got our garlic planted. When we harvest the garlic – we take out the biggest bulbs to replant and sometimes it feels like we grew all the garlic just to replant it and have a few leftover which is kind of depressing! This is our garlic patch which we seeded to oats, peas and daikon raidsh and it sprouted nicely with all the rain. This will give the microbes another 2 months of sugar before winter vs leaving the soil black.

And we also got the rest of our onions harvested and they are now drying in the. nursery. Now if it ever stops raining we can give all our attention to the carrots!

That’s it for this week.

Thanks and see you soon!
