On the farm this week

Last week was hot and the ground started to dry up, so I arranged to have 4 extra people come this morning to harvest carrots before the scheduled rain this afternoon. But then we all know what happened overnight: Aggghhhh!!!!

This might be the most water I’ve ever seen on the fields! Many years ago I had bulldozers slope the field and put ditches in to drain it. In order to drain the very back of the farm though I have to pump water from a ditch at the back into one that goes off the farm and if I sleep into late it starts to overflow onto the field like this.

We harvested all the remaining watermelons today. The progression of ripening fruit goes: watermelon, then canteloupe, then squash. That means after this week it’s canteloupe and then squash is last to harvest and we’ll probably start harvesting soon. Here’s. Shola and Sandra harvesting watermelon. Fortunately it is next to a cover crop of sorghum sudangrass which make a nice blanket to drive on with making ruts in the wet soil. It also makes Shola look very short.

And we harvested the brussel spout tops today. We cut the tops off the brussels each year so that they stop growing up and start filling out the brussel spouts on the stalk instead. I tell people everywhere how delicouse they are sauteed with any of the following: garlic, ginger, soy sauce, bacon, onion. Here’s Hin holding up a brussel sprout top and he can not stand the smell of it! Usually when people get to the brussel sprout bin their faces all look like Hins and I notice they’re standing 2 feet further away. But this year I’ll be watching and make sure everyone takes them!

Finally, we are going to have 2 moms at the market starting this week. Adriian is being replaced by his Mom Tina at the CSA table and Barb is still helping out Alyssa at the market table. If anyone’s mom wants to work at the market, let me know!

That’s it for this week,

Thanks and see you soon!
