We’ll have choices from the following veggies this for csa this week: Lettuce, chard, kale, cucumber, zucchini, beans, tomatos, broccoli, onions, cabbage, carrots, beets, celery, dill, cilantro, parsley, basil, green onion.
On the farm this week
I’m loving this cool weather and I feel like this weather is confusing the insects even more than it’s confusing me. Normally we are covering and uncovering the broccoli starting in July because of cabbage moths, but we only saw the first ones on Thursday and so have only now covered up the kale, brussel sprouts and fall broccoli. For someone reason covering the plants is everyones absolute least favourite job. I don’t mind it though, I watched them do it all day and was totally fine. Here’s Sarah and Kateryna rolling out covers over our fall broccoli in the distance.
And I know speaking of cabbage moths probably makes everyone hungry for cabbage, so we are harvesting cabbage this week. Each year I’m reminded that not many people eat cabbage, so this year I tried to grow smaller cabbages by planting them 10″ apart rather than 12″ apart. It doesn’t sound like that big a difference in spacing, but the resulting difference in cabbage size has been huge. And by huge I mean then cabbages are small. For a couple varieties 10″ seemed to work pretty well and we have a lot 2 – 3 lb cabbages. But many were around 1 lb especially for the later varieties, so I think I will stick to 12″ next year! And just when I thought I didn’t have to worry about running over baby birds anymore, a new bird nest was found. This time in the carrots. We dig the carrots with a big bar that undercuts them and lifts them up that is pulled behind the tractor. These birds were in the carrots when the tractor drove over them and lifted them up and they slept through the whole thing. Does anyone know what kind of birds these are?
And finally, we are pulling up our garlic this week. We just grow the garlic as and extra to sell. We will cure it for a couple weeks in the greenhouse and after that it will be available for bulk purchase. Here’s everyone harvesting the garlic today
