We’ll have choices from the following veggies for CSA this week:
lettuce, spinach, bok choi, asparagus, scallions, arugula/mizuna, radish/turnip, pea shoots
On the farm this week:
Spring has flown by and last week we were scrambling to finish planting the garden before we started harvest today. Thankfully Friday we managed to finish our planting on Friday and I’m glad we were not having to harvest from a garden we hadn’t planted yet! The last thing we planted on Friday was the melons – so if any one asks if we have melons this week the answer is wait 10 weeks from Friday. Here’s Morgan and Sandra planting onions way back in April.

The spring has been very nice so far though; and that is mainly because I have not seen ONE mosquito. If I had to choose between drought and no mosquitos and regular rain and lots of mosquitos – I’d probably choose the drought.
What we have to deal with, as usual, is flea beetles. In fact our brassicas are all still covered. It’s really hard to keep on eye on them when they. are covered. So when we uncovered them today to start harvest I was relived to find that they were there. I think it’s safe to say that Hannah and Sandras highlight of the summer was crawling along under row cover re seeding bok choi by hand on a plus 30 degree day. If your Bok choi/arugula has some little holes, that is from the flea beetles and we hope you’ll understand. But you can’t see the holes when it’s cooked…
Here’s Alyssa and Hannah harvesting some radishes – also know as ‘Winnipeg melons’ for the melon lovers out there.

The other nice thing about the spring is our great crew who all returned from last year, plus one new person ( Hanna). And, for the first time ever; I got a picture of everyone together. So from Left to right here is: Alyssa (who again will be at the Wolseley market every Tuesday and Thursday), Sandra (who probably everyone has emailed with), Jonathan/me, Shola (who started last year and works 2 jobs!) Sarah (the O.G from the beginning of the farm), Hannah (the new girl), and Morgan who takes all the leftover plants home and grows better tasting veggies than me! In front is Gus, who is Sandra’s dog and knows to look at a camera. I think he thinks of himself as a model and loves getting his picture taken. I apologize to anyone picking up at the farm who has been terrorized by him. Finally, not pictured is Barb who is Alyssa’s Mom and will be helping out at the Wolseley CSA pick up again this year.

That’s it for this week. See you soon!
