Farm news, Sept 15

We will have the following veggies this week:

lettuce, chard, kale, kohlrabi, dill, cilantro, parsley, scallions, onions, potatoes, carrots, beets, leeks, tomatoes, winter squash, beans, peppers, melon

We’ll have a few different kinds of squash: spaghetti, butternut, acorn. blue hubbard, pumpkin and ichi kuri.  This was our last picking of beans, and they’re a little big, but I found they’re mostly still tasty and good to eat.

On the farm this week:

We had our first frost Thursday night –  I guess winter must be coming.  I think that it’s just as well we had a frost this week because since our cucumbers and other summer fruits seem to have stopped producing and I thought this week we should start harvesting the winter squash which are much easier to find once we’ve had a frost to kill  the foliage.

Now that we had a frost – the weather is finally nice!  Yesterday the sun came out I took off my parka, and for a couple hours I had this brief experience of happiness again. I was looking at the weather and it looks like I might be happy all week!

We’re also busy cleaning all the storage onions which I hope to have finished and out of the greenhouse by the end of the week so that we can start moving the storage squash into the greenhouse to start curing.  Still so much to do!

That’s it for this week.
