On the farm this week:
Lettuce is back in abundance now as our final planting is ready to harvest. Here’s Sarah and Sandra harvesting lettuce this morning. The annoying thing about lettuce is that all summer it bolts, and then in fall when it doesn’t bolt – the conditions are perfect for disease and we’re already seeing some, so we want to use this up while we can!

And it’s actually not correct that that was our final lettuce planting. This week we completeed our actual final lettuce planting. Here’s Morgan and Sarah planting lettuce in the tunnel. I always forget and am amazed by how fast everything grows in the tunnel compared to outdoors at this time of year. This picture is from when they started planting Thursday and it’s already grown as much as our outdoor lettuce grows in 2 weeks. I unfortunatley did not have time to test the drain tile out before planting. So I will try flooding the tunnel in March before we plant again in spring.

We also planted our garlic this week. Below is our garlic adn you might be wondering what it looks like grass is sprouting. It’s my goal to always have something growing on the soil; so I seeded oats and peas before planting the garlic and it’s all sprouting now. This will give provide another month or so of food and shelter for the microbes while the garlic sprouts it’s roots

And finally, it’s time for all children’s favourite vegetable: Brussle sprouts! They’re even better then the Brussel sprout tops. These tall stalks have been growing in the field since the beginning of May and in the nursery since April. That’s almost half a year to grow these!

There is now only one vegetable that we have not yet harvested. It is a tiny fraction of the size of Brussel sprouts, but has been growing almost as long. It is a kind of root vegetables – any guesses?
That’s it for this week
See you soon!
