Another harvest season begins! This week we will have the following veggies for you:
baby lettuce mix, spinach, bok choy, radish, turnips, a selection of 4 mustard greens including arugula, mizuna, red rain and tatsoi, cilantro, green onions, alfalfa sprouts and beet greens.
lettuce, spinach, bok choy, mustard greens and beet greens are all apparently super foods! (According to post I saw on facebook a while ago – so don’t quote me on that yet). This is super food week!
As always, if you have any great recipe suggestions please send them to me and I can post them to the blog.
If you like spicy mustard greens then try the arugula or red rain, and if you like mild, try to mizuna or tatsoi.
Everyone who tries the baby turnips loves them. They’re similar to a radish, but milder and sweeter. They’re great in salad or lightly sauteed. And don’t forget, you can eat the tops of both of them.
Bok choi and beet greens are both greet raw or sauteed.
On the farm this week:
Last week we had a wild hoeing frenzy to try to get the weeds under control before harvest starts and time for weeding is sparse.
Then Sunday we took a break and Monday all the weeds were back! (ok. not all of them). I was actually kind of relieved because I was having trouble thinking of how to keep us busy this week.
Harvesting, planting and weeding your veggies this year are Michael, Sarah, Nicole and myself. Sarah missed last summer because she was walking to Mexico, but this year she decided to only walk to Arizona over the winter, so I’m super happy that she’s back. Nicole, a.k.a the friendliest person alive, is back for year 5 now! and she will be harvesting Tuesdays and Thursdays with us and going to the market. Michael is new to gardening this year and is a super hard worker and caught on quick.
That’s it for this week. I look forwarding to seeing you all at the market on Tuesday and Thursday.
