Farm news July 29

In your box this week CSaers’ will have a choice among:

Lettuce, spinach, chard, kale, celery, carrots, broccoli, eggplant, cabbage, onions, peppers, zucchini, beets, turnips, beans cucumbers, hot peppers, scallions, dill, cilantro, parsley and basil.

The onions are really sweet and mild.  I like to eat them raw like an apple – I recommend trying it (notice sarah’s showing off her zucchini scratched arm).

On the farm this week:

We decided to switch the seasons around on the farm and have fall now and summer later.  I don’t know why we didn’t think of doing this before because the cool weather makes working so much more enjoyable!  We’re planning to have summer in October when the mornings are icy on the fingers. The only part I didn’t enjoy was having 2.5 inches of rain during our thursday harvest last week.  Nicole loved it though, she said it saved her from having to shower.  Amazingly the rains soaked right in – the ground was parched!

We’ve finished the last weeding (I’m hoping) of the potatoes and corn field.  Now we just have to wait a little bit longer and we’ll be harvesting potatoes.

I’ve also been noticing we have a hoofed visitor frequenting the fields.  It looks like it took a bite of chard and then ran as fast as it could in the other direction.  Last winter we had deer eating a lot of spinach, so maybe this year I’ll just hide the spinach behind some chard and it will be fine.

That’s it for this week.  See you soon!
