Farm news, July 05/2021

We’ll have the following veggies this week: lettuce, spinach, chard, kale, broccoli, sugar snap peas, beets, turnips, radish, arugula, mustard, zucchini, kohlrbai, dill, cilantro, basil, green onions,.

The peas are sugar snap peas which means they are edible pods – no shelling required.

On the farm this week:

I’ve never been so excited to see the weather forecast as I did for this week: because last week was hawt! Also last week we had so much to do that really couldn’t wait: we had to finish saving the carrots from being drowned out by weeds and we also had to finish planting all our fall broccoli. But..we did it and I have the B.O to prove it, just ask anyone. This week is cool and much less planting to do so hopefully everyone can recover a bit. In the background of this photos is all the fall broccoli we planted on friday (you can’t really see antyhing but the rows).

Also, new and exciting is we have the first male to work on the farm in like forever. For some reason, males never apply to work here. And usually when we do have males come out to try a day they say at the end of the day they’re like ‘whoa man this job is too hard but thanks anyways’. But this year we have Ronald and this is his second week now and it’s looking promising that he’ll survive the summer. Don’t let me down Ronald! We also have Sarah above who is new and so we have our full roster for the summer harvest now.

Well, the excessive leafy green part of the year seems to be ending and with the heat our broccoli and peas are maturing super fast and all at once. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that they pace themselves. Right now the broccoli planned for last week is ready this week, and the broccoli planned for this week is going to be mostly ready this week. So everyone will get broccoli this week.. And probably a lot of peas!

This weekend I had nice visit from my family. I tricked them into visiting me and not telling them that meant harvesting broccoli and zucchini all day Saturday. The problem with that trick I’ve used it now and they’ll never visit again. Oh well, it was still worth it.

Here they are helping me pick broccoli

That’s it for this week

See you soon,
