On the farm this week:
It’s the time of year when every time it rains it takes longer to dry out. It had just dried out enough for us to start digging carrots again this week, but then it rained again last night! So; we are back to waiting for the ground to dry out – this time a little a little more anxiously then last week. We are hoping not to repeat last year fall when we were forced to finally dig up wet carrots. The one good thing about having clay caked carrots to clean last winter was that it forced me to buy a carrot washer – which is amazing!! We now wash carrots, potatos and beets with this washer that has a bunch of spinning brushes that the carrots tumble around in. Now that I have one I can’t believe we’ve been washing carrots by hand all these years. Someone should have slapped me after my first year of doing that! Here’s Sandra washing carrots.
Although we didn’t dig up any carrots this week, but fortunately we dug up some potatoes before the rain. Here’s everyone collecting potatos.
We also finished weeding our last planting of lettuce and spinach. And we now have spinach back for the rest of the season! = (unless something goes horribly wrong). We have had a tough year for spinach. The first few plantings got rained out, then the subsequent ones didn’t germinate in the heat wave and now, with our 9th planting of spinach, we finally have a spinach crop – Hallelujah! I hope people get 9x as much enjoyment out of this spinach, and if you don’t even like spinach, please pretend that you do. Here’s Alyssa and Kateryna hoeing our last planting of spinach. This is also where we had just dug up our garlic and so you can see all the brown garlic stems in the pathway.
