Farm news June 30/2025

We’ll have choices from the following veggies for CSA this week:

lettuce, spinach, chard, kale, broccolini, peas, beets, carrots, radish, turnip, dill, cilantro, parsley, green onions. garlic scapes.

On the farm this week:

It looks like we’ll be getting some heat this week. With the extra heat I hope by next week we’ll be harvesting a good amount of this crop (below). This is the same crop that I showed you in a previous newsletter, but now I’ve mowed and tilled in the luhious rye crop and seeded another rye crop to start growing in between these rows. If you can tell what crop is peaking in to the picture, you will win a free one!

This last week we seeded all the winter carrots. I seed all our crops with a one row push seeder and if you add up all the rows it adds up to a 5km row for the winter carrots! And if you add up all the carrots for the season it is 10km of carrots! Here is our field of carrots that up until Friday was still a field of all all the lettuce, spinach, radish, bok choi that everyone has been eating for the first 4 weeks. It doesn’t look like 5km of carrots, but it is!

We are on to our next patch of greens and this one is the nicest so far ( though there was only one other before it) We’ve got many different head lettuces including red and green summer crips, butter head, iceberg (my favorite), and romaine, and some of they are getting big! Here’s Sarah harvesting lettuce.

And people have been asking how we wash all the lettuce. Here is a picture our washing set up. The bit tub has a jacuzzi blower to bubble air through to gently stir and mix up the leaves. Then to dry, the greens go into these salad spinners which are washing machines with the top cut off the motor rewired to a switch. I’ve learned over the years I need to have 2 of everything because I don’t know when one is going to break down. Also apparently cutting the tops of voids the warranty.

That’s it for this week

See you soon!
