Farm news July 14/2025

We’ll have choices from the following veggies this week for CSA:

Lettuce, spinach, chard, kale, broccoli, broccolini, cucumber, zucchini, onion, beets, carrots, cabbage, dill, cilantro, parsley, basil, green onion

On the farm this week:

We picked our last peas last week! We picked every last pea left on the plants, so I mowed the peas to prepare for planting our winter beets here next Now that we’re done picking peas I had a momentary feeling of joy thinking ‘what will I do with all this time now?’ Then I turned my head slightly and saw the many weeks worth of weeding still to do, the potato beetles making their way through the potato plants and went back to panicking about about not having enough time again.

We also finished our last planting of broccoli this week, which means the only thing we’ll be transplanting now for the rest of the year is lettuce. Our planting is 90% done! Here’s our last planting of Broccoli.

And we are harvesting the sweet onions this week. They usually are ready around the same time as the cucumbers for a good reason. Cucumber salad just shouldn’t be eaten without them in it! Here’s Alyssa in our onion patch.

In the past I’ve seeded cereal rye in the pathways as a great weed suppressing soil building ground cover. Last I tried clover intending it to be a perennial ground cover and that worked pretty well but required regular mowing. This year I decided to try perennial ryegrass with clover as I would not need to mow it. As you can see it’s so far taking a long time to establish and the weeds are finding lots of space for rent in there. At the moment I’m thinking oats was the better choice, but it has the rest of the summer to prove me wrong. The problem with doing experiments on a farm is you only get to try them 1x / year. I’ve been farming 15 years and I’ve still only done many things 1x in all that time!

And finally, we’re throwing in some cabbage this week: Here’s Sandra, who’s birthday is today harvesting cabbage. Whenever it’s someone’s birthday we make them work alone and harvest all the heavy things.

That’s it for this week!

See you soon!
