Farm news week 4

This week in your box:

Lettuce, spinach, peas, radish or kohlrabi, broccoli, carrots, beets or turnips, a selection of herbs (dill, cilantro, parsley, basil) and scallions and zucchinis.

The turnips are a delicious sweet salad turnip and are great to eat raw.  Everyone who’s tried them loves them.

There will also probably be zuchinni for Thursday pick up.

Also, please bring your plastic bags back each week to reuse when you stock up with veggies.  I will also put out a container for re-using your elastic bands.

This week at the market:  There will be a couple new vendors.  Someone who makes sourdough bread and someone selling trout.

Also, Jenna Kessler, who’s organized a lot of the market will be performing on Tuesday and Suss will be performing Thursday

This week on the farm:

With all the rain we’ve had and tall grass at the farm there are lots of mosquitos now.  Kitana and Nicole deserve an extra big thanks this week for all their pea picking in the heat and mosquitos.  Yesterday they picked 115 lbs of peas.  It was 30 degrees and  because of the mosquitos, they picked in their rain suits.  Kitana said she preferred cooking to death to being eaten alive.

My excuse for not helping with the peas is that I was buying a tractor.  Renting was becoming expensive, so I bit the bullet and bought one.  The front end loader is a super nice feature.  As Joel Salatin said when people spread manure before there were front end loaders they shoveled, and shoveled, and shoveled, and shoveled, and shoveled, and shoveled, and shoveled, and shoveled, and shoveled……

I’ve already put the tractor to good use yesterday when I tilled in a field of oats, faba beans and weeds.  Next I’ll be planting fall rye and red clover in this field.

    BEAUTIFUL tractor!

About the mosquitoes… when we had a Christmas tree farm, and had to shear all the trees in July, we had mosquito netting outfits – head and arm gear, which did the trick, and was probably cooler than rain gear… this would be a good time to find those!

THANK YOU for working so hard in this extreme heat, with all those mosquitoes, to bring us fresh food every week… I DO know how hard it can be, and want YOU to know that the fruits (er veggies) of your labour are VERY much appreciated!

    Ellen
