We’ll have the following veggies this week for CSA:

lettuce, spinach, chard, kale, arugula, mizuna, mustard mix, radish, turnip, baby beets, broccoli, zucchini, kohrlabi, bok choi, green onions, dill, cilantro, parsley,

On the farm this week

We’re starting to move into some new vegetables and out of some of the older ones. This week we’re starting on beets and kohlrabi, our zucchini is producing lots more now, the peas are almost ready (next week for sure) and the cucumbers are slowly picking up speed.

Here’s our first harvest of beets going on. Kelsey thought that if she stood in front of all these weeds people will have sympathy on us and offer to help. In case you thought those were beets at Kelseys feet, they’re thistles! We usually pull weeds as we harvest, but somehow you can only see thistles when someone else is weeding and not you. I decided I was just going to pull all the thistles the other day and after pulling a couple I suddenly couldn’t find any! They’re sneaky that way.

We’ve also finished off our first planting of radish, turnip and arugula and we’re on to our second planting of these things and this second planting is looking much nicer. This week it will be a different variety of arugula with serrated edges and we also tried some ‘french breakfast’ radish in this second planting. I don’t know where they got their name from so I’m just assuming that French people eat radishes for breakfast. They look neat, but taste exactly like another radish.

Today we also planted half of our fall broccoli. In the background is clover which this field has been for almost 3 years now. The clover has been loosening up the soil with its root system and bringing up nutrients and adding nitrogen and organic matter to the soil for the last 3 years. So I”m hoping this broccoli does really well! We also planted our fall carrots here in this field last week beside the broccoli.

That’s it for this week.

See you soon,

Jonathan, Sarah, Irina, Kelsey, Michelle

French breakfast radishes! I’ve never had one but I’ve read a lot about them. They’re supposed to great with sweet butter. Who knew? You’re doing a great job on introducing new greens and other veggies. Thanks for all your hard work!

Thanks Tim! As far as I can tell the taste just like a regular radish. But see what you think…
