Farm News, Aug 12

In your box this week:  Csaer’s will have a choice among:

Beans, carrots, cucumbers, onions, peppers, broccoli, eggplant, tomatoes (full shares), potatoes, lettuce, spinach, kale, beets, dill, parsley, cilantro, basil, hot peppers, zucchini and scallions.

On the farm this week:

The potatoes are doing well, and the tomatoes are starting to ripen now and so we’ll have a bit out this week – but we’re giving you a tough choice to make: potatoes or tomatoes.  I know, it’s cruel, but we’ll have 9 weeks more of potatoes and lots of tomatoes on the way.

We put a lot of energy into trying to keep the tomatoes healthy this year.  Each week Sarah’s been out with a back pack sprayer spraying the tomato plants with ocean minerals and potassium.  So far, I’m not sure it’s made a big difference to the tomatoes. Sarah on the other hand can now shoulder press 400 lbs.  I”m going to just keep trying to grow better tomatoes.

I was expecting corn to be ready a week ago, but it’s ripening slowly in this cool weather.   My only concern is that it might all ripen at the same time.  The corn on the right was planted almost one month after the corn on the left.   While we’ve been waiting for the corn on the left to ripen it’s caught up in size and the cobs are almost as big now.  If it ripens at the same time, I’m not sure what we’ll do except have a corn eating contest.

That’s it for this week.

See you soon Tuesday or Thursday!
