spinach, chard, kale, brussels sprouts, squash, cabbage, celeriac, kohlrabi, romanesco, potatoes, carrots, onions, leeks, scallions, parsley.
This is the week of foreign vegetables: celeriac, kohlrabi, romanesco. I haven’t even heard of those vegetables and I’m growing them!
Celeriac has been growing in popularity and a few people have been asking for it, so I gave it a try. It’s basically celery root, and you can shred it in salads, slice it into chips or make some great soups with it. I like to eat them like an apple. It stores forever also, so you have time to find a good recipe. Romanesco is a cauliflower variety that looks and tastes similar to broccoli. I planted a few to try them out this year.
On the farm this week:
It’s our last week of harvest, and I’m definitely looking forward to having a nap at the end of it. We’ll still have another couple weeks of harvesting storage crops, putting away irrigation, cleaning up the fields and spreading compost, but sleeping in will definitely now be part of the schedule.
Today was a busy day on the farm – we had 2 visitors. One from Germany and another all the way from Winnipeg who came to help pick spinach and clean brussels sprouts. Thanks to Monica and Erica for the help today.
I would like to let the record show that I was working today, and on the most tedious job also – cleaning brussels sprouts. But I should mostly thank Sarah, who everyday when we go to the market is back at the farm working – which has lately been cleaning brussels sprouts.
