Farm news, Sept 16

In your box this week is a selection from:  lettuce, spinach, cucumber, zucchini, tomatoes, cauliflower, broccoli, basil, peppers, potatoes, carrots, beets, onions and leeks.

The caulilfower this week are pretty enormous.   One was  12 lbs !   I didn’t mean for this to happen, but it happened and now I guess you all have to deal with it.  I just tried to see how hard it would be to eat a whole one, and made it through a quarter.  I plan to have finished the rest of the 12 lber before the market tomorrow.

You will also be getting a larger amount of basil this week. Because it’s only a matter of time before we get a killing frost, we’re harvesting all our basil  –   I figure it’s better the csa gets it than a frost does.   So, it’s time to get your pesto on!  You can also hang the plants to dry or do something else with the basil that I can’t think of.

We had our first frost Sunday night and woke up this morning to this:

Once all the snow melted, it seemed he only casualties  were the  zucchinis and some of the cucumbers.   We’ve picked roughly 4000 lbs of cucumbers this summer, so I guess they’ve had a long and ‘fruitful’ life and it’s time soon to move on to the winter squash.  Thanks cucumbers  plants for all the cucumbers this year!

We’ve got all the onions cleaned up and in storage now.  Thanks to Sarah, (a.k.a as the onion machine), for putting in a solid weekend of cleaning onions.

Soon our onion harvest will  consist of grabbing a bag of onions and dumping them into a bin.  It doesn’t get much easier than that!

Finally, Betty asked me to mention that she will be at the market this Thursday with her apples, apple cider and other yummy apple treats.
