CSA veggies this week will be a selection from:
lettuce, spinach, broccoli, eggplant, corn, cucumber, zuchinni, pepper, canteloupe, tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, beets, onions, brussel sprout tops, dill, parsley, cilantro, basil and scallions.
We are taking a week off kale and chard because they’re growing slow now and need to recover from some worm eatings. However, to satisfy the green lovers we will be doing bunches of spinach and brussel sprout tops. The brussel sprout tops are something I think everyone needs to try at least once. They’re nutritious and delicious. I’ve posted a couple recipes for them below.
On the farm this week:
Well the days are definitely getting shorter now. We decided to move our start time back to 6:30 this week after an incident last week when, after we had just finished harvesting all the lettuce(or so we thought), the sun came up and it turns out we had been in the neighbours yard picking raspberries the whole time. That was embarrassing!
I hadn’t taken any pictures this week, so I went to take one this morning, and this is what I got (the onions if you can’t tell):
Here is a picture from a couple weeks ago when we were finishing our last harvest of the first planting of cabbage. Here is Nicole and Kitana once again if full rain gear with clear skies. This is all tilled in now and will be planted to rye soon. The tall green plants on the right are the brussel sprouts. We cut the tops off now so that they are no longer able to grow a longer stalk and instead put their energy into filling out their Brussels (? I can’t think of what they’re actually called).
We’ve been thinking of a farm day, and many people have been asking us when that will be and we do plan to have it. We’ve been waiting for the mosquitos to subside because I don’t think people would have stayed long if we had it earlier. We’re still working out timing, but probably in a couple weeks. I’ll keep you posted.
This week at the market:
Fruit share will have apple cider for sale, and on sept 11th at 5:30 pm, Mark Klassen from Urban Eatin Gardeners Co-op will be doing a workshop on edible landscapes for your yard and home. Now’s the time to plant the seed of garden ideas and see what takes root over the winter.
